Mercury is unethical and uses bait and switch tactics

Posted by Alisa on March 30, 2011

I filed a complain with the Ca. Dept of Insurance against Mercury. I purchase a homeowners ins. policy from Mercury. They sent an inspector out who spent 2 hrs and over 100 photographs to confirm the information on my property. Five months into the policy I get notice in the mail, stating the policy doesn't cover my guest house and I have to buy another policy for the guest house and demanded a 1,700 payment. I refused, my agent said she would look into it and then called back and said disregard the note it was a mistake. Two months later get a statement demanding the full payment of $1,700 and next day a voicemail saying policy was canceled. This is fraud and they used a bait and switch tactic to sell their policy only to tell me 5 months later they didn't realize the guest house was a separate structure...that's funny becuase all the pictures show it and my application described exactly the lay out. I canceled my policy and went back to Farmers who insured my entire property for less than the Mercury policy. I'm waiting for the response from Ca Dept of Ins. I continue to receive statements demanding payment for the second policy they wanted me to purchase which I never did. They've gone as far as to threaten to send it to collections to boot. I am going to file a complaint with the Secretary of State next. I read reviews dating from 2006-2010 from people with similar experiences with Mercury. This took place in the 2010 so clearly State's aren't doing a good job regulating Mercury's business practices as they continue to employ bait and switch and then not uphold their own policy. Since the very agencies that we the taxpayer fund to regulate businesses from ripping us off are not doing their jobs, it is imperative that we, the taxpayer and consumer, put these companies out of business. I will make sure that nobody I know every deals with Mercury and whatever you do, avoid insuring with Mercury, they engage in this sort of fraud throughout the country.
